To provide at-risk Kindergarten through 3rd grade children in the Chicagoland area with the key tools required to achieve grade-level reading through music and drama.

Reading In Motion creates and delivers an innovative supplemental reading program that gets at-risk kindergarten to third grade students up to grade level. Successfully partnering with Chicago’s inner-city elementary schools for more than 20 years, Reading In Motion uses music and drama to engage students and help teachers make their core reading programs effective.

A recent third-party study showed that 88% of kindergartners in Reading In Motion classrooms learned how to read at or above grade level, in contrast to only 17% of kindergartners in comparison schools. During the most critical stage in the education continuum, Reading In Motion capitalizes on the connection between the arts and reading to create a firm foundation for lifetime literacy, leveling the playing field for at-risk students. Research shows if a student falls behind in reading by the end of first grade, it’s unlikely that he or she will ever catch up.

Reading In Motion empowers teachers as well as students. Reading In Motion provides training for classroom teachers to implement the program so they can boost their students’ reading ability. Teachers participate in a three-day summer training program and receive individual support from a Reading In Motion teacher coach once a week throughout the school year.  Teachers also receive all the supplies needed to implement the program and a detailed handbook for ongoing reference.

The program uses a step-by-step approach to managing small groups, learning centers and data-driven instruction.  With this approach, teachers are able to meet with small groups of students every week, addressing their unique needs. Reading In Motion continually monitors student progress so teachers can adjust their approach accordingly.

Reading In Motion helps schools get more of their at-risk kindergarten to third graders up to grade level in reading, so the kids and their schools can avoid the frustration of playing “catch up” for years to come. Investing in students’ reading skills from kindergarten through third grade enables schools to build the critical foundation that fourth to eighth graders need to succeed.
